The Neighbourhood Helpers Project - Chinese Outreach Project
(NHP-COP)
Neighbourhood Helpers - Chinese Outreach Project

Many Chinese seniors encounter difficulties in their daily life because they do not know English. They are often at a loss when they need to access community and government services, especially health services. There are many seniors living alone, without any family or social support. In May 2008, the Vancouver Second Mile Society started the Chinese Outreach Project to address the needs of these seniors. Through this Project, we hope to reach out to the Chinese seniors in the community, providing them with the services they need and also at the same time the warmth and care to spice up their life.

Aims of the project:

  • Establish a community that cares for Chinese seniors.
  • Improve the quality of life for Chinese seniors.
  • Decrease isolation for the seniors.
  • Reconnect the seniors to the community.
  • Enable the seniors to remain as active participants of society and to enjoy a fulfilled life in their golden years.

We reach out to:

  • Chinese seniors, 65 years old and above,
    who r
    eside in the Downdown Eastside/Strathcona.

The program also includes residents in the area:

  • Chinese, 45 years old and above, life affected by chronic health issues, in financial difficulties.
